Faith Defying Logic

In the aging coliseum

of Vladimiria, Count Vladimir sits in his royal balcony overlooking the entire stadium. The vampire-skulled Count sits on his throne musing with Lord Geremy, the Black Lord of Lore, before paus- ing as several guards walk onto the balcony bringing out Sir Daniel stripped of his armor and in thick chains.

“Are you sure that you won’t change your mind and join us?” Vladimir asks him.

“I’m afraid not,” Daniel replies. “How about you? Are you ready to repent of your ways.”

“Hmmff! You are delusional. Very well then, I have a surprise for you, Great Son of Henders,” Count Vladimir says as he walks over to the chained Sir Daniel drawing his sword. “Now for your ‘thorn in the flesh,” Count Vladimir says to Daniel before driving the tip of his splintered blade into Sir Daniel’s side. Daniel grunts in pain as he drops to his knees, still bound by the thick chains. Vladimir gives his sword a good twist and watches with enjoyment at Daniel’s plight.

“Enough!” Lord Geremy echoes sternly. “He must be allowed to defend himself against the dragon.”

Vladimir glances at Lord Geremy, then withdraws his sword from Daniel’s side.

Sir Daniel, still on his knees, begins to pray. “Lord God, give me Your strength…”

“You are pathetic!” Vladimir interupts, angered, as he looms over Sir Daniel. “Calling on your God to save you. Where is the logic in that? I am the only one who can save you now. You should be praying to me!”

Sir Daniel looks up at Count Vladimir and says boldly, That’s the thing about faith– it defies all logic.

In this excerpt from the novel, Nephilim the Remnants, Sir Daniel tells his captor that “the thing about faith is– it defies all logic.”  Recalling some of the great events of faith found in the Bible, this seems to be a very accurate statement about faith.

Here are some examples of Faith Defying Logic found in the Bible-

  • Abraham and Sarah giving birth to a son in their extreme old age– 90 and 100 years old. (Genesis 21:1-7)
  • Moses parting the Red Sea as the Israelites walked through on dry ground to escape the Egyptian army. (Exodus 14)
  • The fall of the city of Jericho by the Israelites walking circles around it. (Joshua 5:13-6:27)
  • A boy named David defeating the giant Goliath with a small stone. (1 Samuel 17)
  • Shadrach, Meshach, & Abednego surviving inside the fiery furnace after refusing to bow down before the Babylonian idol. (Daniel 3)
  • Daniel surviving the night in a den of hungry lions for boldly praying to God. (Daniel 6)
  • Jonah saved from drowning by being swallowed by a whale. (Jonah)
  • Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. (John 11)
  • Jesus allowing himself to be killed on a cross so He could be raised back to life and forgive all sins! (Matt. 27 & 28, Mark 15 & 16, Luke 23 & 24, John 19-21)

And the list could go on. None of these things made any logical sense but by faith they happened and the outcome was amazing! God doesn’t always call us to do things that make sense, especially in the eyes of others and many times they don’t even make sense to ourselves. But remember to hold onto your faith in God even when it doesn’t make sense because the Bible tells us –

“My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways And My thoughts than your thoughts.”  (Isaiah 55:8-9)

Inside Nephilim The Remnants: Character Profiles

029I have been receiving great comments from my readers, kids and adults alike, about how they really enjoy the Character Profiles pages in Nephilim the Remnants. So it has prompted me to share a post on the unusual way the Character Profiles pages came to be in the book.

Several months before the final version of the book was sent to the publisher, I had a dream. Yes, I said it “I had a dream.” Not a Martin Luther King Dream, an actual dream while I was sleeping. In my dream I was looking through the pages of a book. On the pages were various images of characters and their respective profiles. I was so interested in the pictures and descriptions of these characters in my dream that I thought to myself “I need to do this for my book.” Then I woke up. Immediately, I knew what I had to do.

Through-out the course of writing Nephilim the Remnants, I would sketch and draw images of the characters, places, and other objects while brainstorming for the story. I accumulated quite a few drawings and used over 100 images through-out the pages of Nephilim the Remnants. So I went through all my drawings and picked out my favorite ones to use for each character. I put them all together in a section at the beginning of the book titled Character Profiles along with a brief written description.

And so, there you have it, dreams really do come true! – the dream inspired Character Profiles pages and how they came to be a part of Nephilim the Remnants. I hope you enjoy these Character Profiles and all the illustrations for that matter. I believe they greatly enhance the storytelling of Nephilim the Remnants!

Now for me personally, I know God can speak to us through our dreams and I knew once I awoke from my dream that God had spoken to me in a unique way. God is truly the inspiration for the Character Profiles pages, and for this book, Nephilim the Remnants.

Let Freedom Ring!

4th-of-july-flag-550x320This Independence Day I am truly grateful for the freedoms we have in America.

Freedoms that many brave patriots have fought, bled, and died for. Freedoms that seem to be quickly diminishing and some which have already been forgotten.

But the true spirit of freedom cannot be quenched. Men and women still fear God and strive for freedom.

However, freedom is not free. The cost of freedom is death. Freedom and death go hand in hand. Long have the two been connected to each other. One dies so another can live free. But when death is no longer feared, only then is true freedom achieved. It is the bravery of such people, that stands against the tyranny of oppression in this world.

I have been blessed to be able to exercise my religious freedoms in writing the book Nephilim the Remnants. In the pages of this fictional story is the truth of the greatest freedom ever offered. A freedom that can only be found in Jesus Christ- freedom from our sins!

NephilimAmericaSo this Independence Day remember to excercise your religious freedoms that so many Americans paid the price for. Share the ultimate freedom of Jesus Christ with someone, in a way that only you can do. And let freedom ring!

Hidden Easter Eggs in Nephilim the Remnants

easter eggs

This Easter season, I thought it only appropriate to share some of the hidden Easter Eggs in the book, Nephilim the Remnants. No, I’m not talking about colorful plastic eggs with candy inside or decorative, hard-boiled Easter eggs, I’m talking about the hidden treasures found in a movie, video game, or in this instance, a book. Now you may have picked up on some of these Easter Eggs in Nephilim the Remnants all on your own but if you haven’t, here are 5 Easter Eggs just for you:

  • First, there is the supposed pirate, Captain Chris, whose full name  Christopher T. Ian hints to his true character. He goes primarily by Chris through-out the story. So using his first name, Chris, combined with the letter T of his middle initial and the letters of his last name Ian, it spells Christian.
  • Next, there is a major connection between the evil sorcerer Maylor and the military general, Rolyam which is revealed towards the end of the story. But there is a subtle hint to their connection revealed in the spelling of their names, as well. The name Rolyam is Maylor spelled backwards.
  • The character Princess Johanna in the story is based upon the author’s real life wife who is also named Johanna. He wanted to give her something with her own name in print because he remembers her talking about how her name was so unique as a child that she could never find anything with her name printed on it.
  • Also, the main character’s title in the story is Sir Daniel, the Great Son of Henders. Son of Henders is derived from the author’s last name- Henderson. Furthermore, Sir Daniel is mentioned as being a descendant of the legendary, Lord David Henders– and David is the author’s first name.
  • Finally, the most important Easter Egg of all. It is not hidden, yet some will miss this powerful gift. It is the one of salvation and eternal life given to us by Jesus Christ, Himself. Towards the end of chapter 15, a prayer to receive salvation from the LORD is modeled in bold print. Confessing these words with your mouth and believing them in your heart will grant you God’s forgiveness of all your sins- past, present, & future. (But you don’t have to wait to read Nephilim the Remnants to receive this gift, you can have it right now by going here and confessing and believing in your heart.)

This quote comes at a critical point in the story when another character recognizes and praises Sir Daniel for his heroic courage and faith.

“In all my journeys abroad I have never  encountered a man who possessed more courage or faith.”

“My friend, there is one greater than I.” Daniel says humbly. “I just follow Him.”

LastRemnants

There are many memorable quotes found in the fantasy fiction novel, Nephilim the Remnants. This quote specifically comes from the point in the story where the hero, Sir Daniel the Great Son of Henders, faces off against his nemesis, Lord Geremy the black Lord of Lore, for the first time.

“We are one in the same, you and I. The last remnants of an ancient race.”

Standing on a high bridged castle skywalk, Lord Geremy calls out to Sir Daniel making the above statement upon discovering the supernatural glow of Sir Daniel’s eyes. Thus revealing that Sir Daniel is no ordinary man but that he, like himself, is a Nephilim. That is they are both part man and part fallen angel. Then follows an epic battle between these two Nephilim warriors.
